This is a really interesting project. 141 Eyewear, a new Portland-based company spearheaded by two local entrepreneurs, recognizes the vision epidemic mounting worldwide. To address this problem with a viable solution, the company is launching a new line of designer glasses that debuted at The Eye Studio in Portland’s Pearl District on January 29. For every pair of 141 Eyewear purchased, the company donates a new pair of prescription glasses to a person in need. No portions of proceeds. No percentages. One Four One.
In celebrating the release of the 141 Eyewear launch collection, the company founders recently organized a free eye care clinic in southern Taiwan where they arranged free eye exams and provided free prescription glasses to over 200 local residents of this impoverished region. Many of these people lost their homes during the devastation and aftermath of Typhoon Morakot, which took place in August 2009. “We’re blessed to be in a position to start a company and help these people,” said Kyle Yamaguchi, co-founder of 141 Eyewear. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 153 million people need corrective eyewear, but either cannot afford it or do not have access to proper vision care. 141 Eyewear hopes to make a small dent in this epidemic with a straightforward, philanthropic business plan.
“We saw an opportunity to help those in need by starting a for-profit company that will produce top-quality designer frames for all types of people,” said Shu-Chu Wu, co-founder of 141 Eyewear. “We hope to create a sustainable solution of providing eyewear to those in need by selling our glasses.”
The line debuted with a timeless and classic collection of eyewear, all of which is handmade in Japan from the finest plastics and metals. With 10 different frame styles, each in three different colors, the line will not disappoint those looking for a unique frame at an affordable cost. The company mission, “you buy, we give. 141.” appears on the inside of each frame and serves as a reminder of the impact of each pair purchased.
